Tom Petty remembered at private memorial in Los Angeles

Two weeks after his Oct. 2 death, family and friends said goodbye to Tom Petty in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles.

The memorial service for the Rock Hall of Fame member was held Monday at the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine at Palisade Park, according to a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to speak publicly about it.

The temple and meditation garden also served as the venue for the funeral of Petty’s Traveling Wilburys bandmate George Harrison, who died in 2001.

AnnaKim Violette, one of Petty’s two daughters from his first marriage to Jane Benyo, posted a series of photos from the service, captioned with lyrics from his songs.

Petty’s exact cause of death has yet to be determined.

An autopsy was conducted in early October, Los Angeles County coroner spokesman Ed Winter told the Associated Press. While no foul play is suspected, Winter says the coroner investigates all deaths where the deceased hadn’t seen a doctor in six months.

Results of the toxicology screening — to determine whether Petty had any drugs in his system — could take several weeks.
