Bebe Rexha was pressured in music industry to ‘starve’: ‘All I was eating was salad’

Bebe Rexha is continuing her advocacy for loving your body at any size.

The “Meant to Be” singer, who turned 30 on Aug. 30, spoke to Cosmopolitan UK about her struggles starting out in the industry, when she weighed 130 pounds and her label told her to lose another 20.

“It (expletive) me up. I was so cold all the time. I would starve myself before filming a music video,” she said, before describing a female creative director she worked with who monitored her fitness. “She’d sit opposite me at the dinner table and say, ‘You’re not losing enough.’ All I was eating was salad.”.

Elsewhere in the interview, Rexha described how singer/songwriter Pebe Sebert, Kesha’s mother, warned her against working with Dr. Luke, the music producer who Kesha accused of sexual and emotional abuse.

“Her mom came up to me and whispered, ‘Don’t do it,'” she said about Kesha. “She was talking about working with Dr Luke. The music industry can be a dark place, and she could have been trying to stop me from getting in her daughter’s way. But I listened and honestly? Trusting her was the best thing I ever did.”.

Earlier this year, Rexha went public about not being able to find a designer to make a Grammys dress for her body, later sharing an unedited bikini picture to Instagram.

“So I finally get nominated at the Grammys and it’s like the coolest thing ever,” Rexha said in a January video. “And a lot of times artists will go and talk to designers and they’ll make them custom dresses to walk the red carpet. … So I had my team hit out a lot of designers and a lot of them do not want to dress me because I’m too big.”.

Everything worked out in the end for Rexha’s Grammys moment, with Monsoori dressing her in a red tulle gown at the event.

“It was like, I got nominated for two Grammys. It’s my moment, my parents are flying out and I was excited to wear something beautiful, feel like a princess,” she said later about the incident. “And then when I (found out about the dress) it really broke my heart. So I had to say something.”.
